What is CCS Charging?

Electric vehicles (EVs) have been gaining a lot of popularity in recent years. As the world shifts towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future, electric vehicles have become the go-to choice for many people. However, while the shift towards electric transportation has been phenomenal, the infrastructure supporting it is still being developed. One of the best developments in EV infrastructure is the Combined Charging System (CCS), which has revolutionized the way electric vehicles are charged.

In this article, we will discuss what CCS charging is and why it is a game-changer in the world of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging.

1. What is CCS Charging?

Combined Charging System (CCS) is a fast charging system that combines AC and DC charging into one plug-in port. CCS allows electric vehicles to charge at much higher power levels as compared to conventional AC charging. It uses the Type 2 connector for AC charging and the two additional pins for DC charging. CCS was developed by a group of EV manufacturers building a unified charging system that would allow EVs to charge faster and reliably.

2. What are the benefits of CCS charging?

CCS charging has numerous advantages over the conventional AC charging system. With CCS, electric cars can charge at speeds of up to 350kW, which is more than twice the charging speed of Tesla's Supercharger network. CCS also allows electric vehicles to charge at a more uniform rate, reducing the charge time compared to rapid charging options, saving drivers precious time.

3. How does CCS charging work?

CCS Charging stations include both AC and DC charging capabilities. These charging stations take power directly from the grid by means of an AC charger or an inverter, which converts the DC power coming from the battery into AC power. The CCS charging system has two additional pins that allow communication between the vehicle and the charger. The vehicle tells the charger how much energy it needs and at what voltage and current. Once the charging states are communicated, the power supply to the connector is automatically adjusted to the needs of the vehicle.

4. Where can you find CCS charging stations?

CCS charging stations are being installed globally, with Europe leading the way. Major car manufacturers such as Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes have committed to the development of the CCS infrastructure, making it the most recognized and universal DC fast-charging solution. Users of electric vehicles can search for CCS charging stations via various apps, integrated maps, or EV-specific navigation software.

5. How does the adoption of CCS enhance EV's future adoption?

Electric vehicles are still facing issues with their range and charging time. CCS charging can resolve this issue because of the faster charging rates and more reliable charging network. This is especially important because once the battery of an EV runs out, the EV driver will need to find a charging station to charge their vehicle. With the roll-out of CCS charging, the charging infrastructure is being built to support widespread EV charging.

In conclusion, CCS charging has revolutionized the way we charge electric vehicles. It has brought high-speed charging and a more reliable charging system to EVs, enabling the increase in the acceptance of electric vehicles worldwide. By providing a more uniform charging experience across multiple manufacturers, CCS charging is a key part of the infrastructure that will make EVs more practical and user-friendly for drivers. The future of electric vehicles looks brighter with CCS charging as it paves the way for more efficient, reliable and faster charging infrastructure.
