The development of the SAE J1772 standard began in 1996, when General Motors and the utility company, Southern California Edison, started working on a standardized connector for EVs. The main goal was to design a connector that would be compatible with all electric vehicles, regardless of the brand. It took nearly 15 years for the SAE J1772 standard to be agreed upon and implemented.


SAE J1772 Versions


There are two versions of the SAE J1772 standard- Level 1 and Level 2. The Level 1 charging system is a standard household outlet (120-volt). On the other hand, Level 2 charging system requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit, which is similar to what’s used for some home appliances. This level of charging provides a much faster charging speed compared to Level 1.


Features of SAE J1772 Connector


The SAE J1772 connector has five conductors- two for power, two for communication, and one for a signal pilot. The power conductors are for direct current (DC) and alternate current (AC) supply. The communication conductors allow for the EV and charging station to communicate various information, such as the vehicle’s state of charge, which helps avoid charging errors. The signal pilot is used during the charging process to detect communication between the vehicle and charging station.


Safety Measures


The SAE J1772 standard also outlines safety measures to avoid any possible electrical hazards during the charging process. For instance, the connector is designed with a safety mechanism integrated into the lock, which ensures that the connector cannot be removed until the charging process is complete. Additionally, an interlock prevents energization of the connector until it is properly mated with the electric vehicle.
